Fighting Anxiety | What is Anxiety and How Do You Fight It?
Let’s start with the definition. Anxiety is a mental health disorder characterized by feelings of worry, anxiety, or fear that are strong enough to interfere with one’s daily activities.
It often includes panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Sadly, anxiety disorders are on the rise which makes it critical for the Church to understand and help those who are struggling with fighting anxiety in their lives.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America:
- Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year.
- Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment.
- People with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders.
- Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.
Is Anxiety a Lack of Faith? God and Anxiety
In all honesty in today’s world is it any wonder you can find yourself fighting anxiety every day? You live in a cruel and dark world where Satan’s lies and schemes will distract you from the promises of God, therefore, leaving you open to fighting anxiety and spiritual attacks on your mind.
You know God’s truth and you trust in the promises of God, yet you still, struggle and can find yourself trapped in fear when fighting anxiety.
Yet the truth of the matter is much of what you spend your time worrying about never even happens. We need to trust overcoming anxiety with God, not our strength. Remember, God is in control!
Is Anxiety a Sin?
Any Christian GAD sufferer will tell you about the category difference between your faith and your physicality. It is entirely normal to be experiencing significant levels of anxiety on a ‘sight’ level whilst living a life of faith; trusting wholeheartedly in the promises of God.
Recently I found an article on fighting anxiety: Source…The Mind and Soul Foundation
Biblically it seems that there is no case to suggest that you cannot both be anxious and faithful to God. These two tracks of what is happening in the physical and the spiritual seem to be prerequisites to demonstrations of faith.
Take Psalm 56:3 as an example. It doesn’t say, “When I was afraid,” but “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Anxiety and trust co-exist. Equally, Paul attests to this duality when he says, “For we live by faith, not by sight.”(2 Corinthians 5:7)
This has been my own experience, but it has also been evident in the lives of thousands of other anxious Christians who by their struggles largely reflect a deeper level of trust and commitment to God than those untouched by diffuse anxiety.
Can You Overcome Anxiety with God?
YES, you can “overcome anxiety” with God’s word. His scriptures speak truth to your fearful heart and calm your anxiousness and worries. And as you choose to meditate on them, and pray them back to Him, you will be changed.
We’ll be set free from the burden of fear, the weight of worry, and anxiety. One of my favorite verses that has helped me numerous times when fighting anxiety is Isaiah 41:10.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
The words found in this verse are a reminder to your heart, not to be anxious or fearful. God is with you. He is your God. God strengthens you. God helps you. God upholds you with His righteous right hand.
Nothing within this verse says it’s up to you and me to make it through somehow by leaning on our strength does it?
It simply assures you that your God who never sleeps or slumbers, is at work, in you, through you, and He promises to hold you up. There’s no better, safer place to be than in the arms of God.
Trust the Promises of God’s Peace
Satan lies and will always be a slithering snake and lure you towards anxiousness. God offers us a never-ending peace that can never be found without Him. If you start feeling anxious start fighting anxiety with the very words of God.
I want you to read God’s truth and soak them in. Read them over and over. Pray them out loud until they become familiar and you can use them like fiery darts at Satan.
There is power when speaking God’s word! His words are “life” words, soothing to your soul, calming to your spirits, and giving power to your days.
It’s not always easy, and it often comes down to a choice:
- Choosing not to allow anxiety to control our lives.
- Choosing to guard our hearts.
- Choosing to focus our minds on what is truth.
You might still feel anxious, but you can know without a shadow of a doubt that God is with you. You may not be in control, but you can trust your God who is!
Know God Is in Control
When anxiety keeps occupying too much room in your mind and your heart, God gives you the promise that He remains secure. He alone is your refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
No matter what you face, God is in control. It may seem as if life is too chaotic and uncertain, but God remains steadfast, immovable, and strong. Nothing takes God unaware.
God is fully able to show Himself strong on your behalf, as you allow Him to do what only He can do. What seems impossible to you, is possible for your mighty God. God will accomplish far more than you could ever think or imagine.
Spiritual Help for Fighting Anxiety
God longs to free you from “anxiousness” and wants to give you peace that surpasses all understanding. Nothing the world can offer you can do this, even the people and things you love most. Nothing else can fill you with the true peace and hope that only comes from knowing Christ.
God is your burden lifter, sweet friend. The promises of God are alive and well today. I’ve seen God bringing others through troubles time and time again. You can’t fight spiritual warfare on your own and it takes prayer.
You need God’s more than capable hands to speak the following truths to you. I read this in a devotional and it’s the very promise of God!
“Let me carry it for you. I’ve got this burden, and nothing is too big for me to handle, so you can let go, and keep moving on strong. I’m paving your way, leading you forward out of stuck places, covering you in my care.
I’m filling you with peace, with greater joy, no matter what the pressures of the week have been. You can know full well that I understand your struggle and I am here.”

God is Our Refuge and Fortress
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day.
Nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place the Most High, who is my refuge.
No evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands, they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows my name.
When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.
With long life, I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. Psalms 91
