What Are the 8 Benefits of a Positive Attitude in Life?
We all know that there’s a lot of negativity in this world. That leaves us with a choice.
Do you want to fuel the fire of negativity or would you rather approach life from an optimistic perspective and be the light that you’re supposed to be?
Let’s take a look at the importance of a positive attitude in life and how you can live optimistically.
The Bible reminds us of the importance of a positive attitude in life. In Proverbs 17:22 KJV We learn:
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Proverbs 17:22
Someone who has a broken spirit has lost their joy. They may feel beaten down and discouraged. My friend, when you know Jesus as your Savior, you should have eternal hope, love, and joy in your heart.
As a child of God, it’s our job to share the light of Jesus with others. Jesus tells us that our first and second commandments are to love God first, then to love our neighbor as ourselves.
The whole Gospel is based on love. How can we share that love with a broken spirit? We can’t! That’s why we need a positive attitude in life.

1. A positive attitude makes for a happy life
When you approach your life with optimism, you tend to find the good in things, not the bad or negative. You will also be more grateful. A thankful heart is a happy heart. You also receive where you put your focus.
So if you focus on optimism and happiness, then that’s what you’ll get. If everything is negative, you’ll continue to receive negativity in your life. For a truly happy life, you must want to be happy. It’s a choice, my friend!
2. A positive attitude in life helps you to overcome worries
When you approach your life with a positive mindset, it gives you more joy. Joy is that deep-down feeling, where happiness can be sparked by external factors. Joy comes from the Lord.
In Galatians 5:22-23, we learn that joy is a fruit of the spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such, there is no law.”
When you have that joy and peace that comes through the Lord, you don’t have cause for worry. Because you know that God is in control.
3. You respond better to negative situations
When you’re going through trials and tribulations, a positive attitude will look for the blessings in the situation. If you approach life understanding Roman’s 8:28 KJV, which says “
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
I find that looking for blessings and knowing that God is in control will result in a positive outlook. As an optimist, I get pretty frustrated around people who are negative all the time.
It’s just not necessary to find fault, and sadness all the time. It’s okay to be sad when hard times hit. But it’s not okay if you always take that approach in life and you stay that way.

4. When you’re optimistic, you’re happier to be around and easier to get along with
Let me preface this by saying, don’t be a Pollyanna. A Pollyanna is someone who is an over-the-top, excessively, blind optimist. We have to face reality, of course.
But wouldn’t you rather be around a happy optimistic person instead of a negative Nelly?
I certainly would.
And I would never want to be that negative Nelly either. So put a smile on your face and show others your positive attitude in life. Additionally, it’s easier to make friends that way.
5. A positive attitude is contagious
A smile and a positive attitude are contagious, just like a yawn. When someone smiles at you, don’t you smile back?
What about the opposite? If you get snapped at by someone who’s in a bad mood, doesn’t it change your mood too?
Put on your positive attitude in life and make someone’s day. You may be responsible for pulling someone who is in a negative state right into some optimism.
When I’m with someone who is down in the dumps, I make a point of sharing my optimism and pointing out their blessings. Most of the time, I’ve lifted their spirits. I challenge you to do the same.
6. A positive attitude is not circumstantial
Don’t let your attitude be dictated by what happens to you. In other words, if something bad happens, optimistic people don’t let that put them into depression.
Remember that joy that we have deep down inside that comes from the Lord. Keep smiling, so when someone cuts you off in traffic, you’ll shrug it off, say a quick prayer for them and carry on, like the Lord would want you to do.
7. You’ll be healthier with a positive outlook
Negativity causes stress. Stress has a bad impact on your health. On the other hand, a positive attitude in life results in better health. Which would you rather have?
8. Positivity creates success
It’s easier to reach your goals when you have an optimistic outlook. Your employer will look upon you more fondly when you have a positive attitude in life. You will also take a more optimistic approach to the goals you set. If you believe you can accomplish something, you’ll try harder to get there.

How do we switch to a positive attitude in life?
I have an entire positivity challenge over on my blog, One ExceptionalLife, that you can check out if you want to change your positive attitude. It’s called the 30-Day Positivity Challenge: Boost Your Optimism and it is 30 days of tips to boost your optimism. I hope you’ll check it out.
But to get you started, I’ve got five tips for you.
- Pray
- Start each day with a positive thought
- Keep track of what you’re grateful for each day
- Smile at others
- Don’t procrastinate! Follow through on commitments you’ve made to yourself and others.
Those tips should get you started. But just remember, what the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:8 KJV. He wrote, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
And if you do think about and focus on these things, I promise you, you’ll have a great positive attitude in life!
